The Most Imporant Title You Hold
I’m a writer.
An aspiring author.
To be honest, saying those words out loud has always made me want to throw up!
Because with a title, comes some unspoken expectations.
Imagine telling someone you’re an actor. Immediately that will catch someone’s attention if you bring it up in conversation. “Like no way! What shows or movies have you been in?” And say all you’ve done is played in minor theater roles. *crickets*
( I don’t actually believe this is how it will play out. I know plenty of people who have done theater and are incredibly talented! Just bear with me.)
This is how I imagine it playing out if I were to call myself a writer to a stranger.
“That’s really cool, what have you written?”
“Well nothing yet. I mean I have a blog and I’m working on a book, but that’s about it.”
The reality is I cannot control how someone reacts, but what I can do is change my perspective and hold this title with confidence.
Maybe you’re an artist who is just getting started. You’ve been doodling here and there but not much has come out of it. Does this make you any less of an artist if your work is never displayed in an art gallery?
Of course not!
Just like if my books never make it on a shelf in Barnes and Noble, does that mean I’m any less of a writer?
Absolutely not!
We need to stop selling ourselves short.
I had a huge wake up call the other day when my sister-in-law and I were entering the gym. We ran into an old student of mine and he asked what I was up to these days.
“I’m a stay at home mom.”
My sister-in-law then added “And a writer!”
I freaked out at that moment, waiting to hear his reaction…
“Oh wow Ms. that’s really cool! When can I buy your book?”
“Umm, well it’s in the works. I’ll let you know once it’s for sale.”
I couldn’t believe it. Someone outside of my family and friends wants to buy my book! Of course he could have just been being nice. But then I had a similar experience at a coffee shop where the barista said the same thing after telling him I was heading to a book writing retreat.
“That’s a really relevant message. Please let us know when it’s out. I know I need it and I know plenty of my friends who need to hear it too!”
Whether they ever buy a copy or not, this helped give me the boost I needed to start sharing more about my writing journey.
So what title are you afraid to share with others? Maybe you’re also a stay at home mom with a side hustle or a passion no one really knows about because you feel like, “well I’m just a stay at home mom.”
No darling, you’re so much more than that!
You’re a daughter of the most high God! This is the most important title you will ever hold. Everything else comes after that: Wife, Mother, Friend, and *insert,* whatever that passion you have is. Whether it be a painter, a baker, a business woman, I’m telling you today to own it!
Walk in the confidence your Heavenly Father has given you and own the gifts he’s bestowed on you.
And whatever you do sis, don’t let your crown tip!
