Let me tell you about: Jesus’ Sense of Humor
“God laughs at your jokes. He thinks you’re hilarious.”
Those were the words said to my college roommate many years ago during one of our college’s church services.
That night while having dinner in our very boisterous campus dining hall she asked me, “how can God laugh at my jokes when He already knows what we’re going to say or do next?”
I let her question hang in the air for a moment before saying, “I don’t know…I mean God lives outside the bounds of time so maybe He can choose to hear and see things like it’s His first time experiencing them.”
I kept thinking about her question and started asking God questions like, “do you even laugh?” If you do, what makes you laugh and smile?”
Odd questions to ask the God of the universe, I know, but if we are to know him Intimately, wouldn’t you ask those same questions too?
I mean we do it when we are getting to know someone or dating someone, why not ask the same things to the one who created them?
That’s when it started to sink in. If we are made in God’s image, wouldn’t that mean that we have his traits? Meaning if we have a sense of humor, where would we have gotten it from? It’s not just the traits we got from our parents, but from the one who created us!
Imagine what the disciples who knew him so intimately would say? They probably would say that He wasn’t serious all the time. He was his true self with them. I picture him laughing out loud over something silly Peter said over dinner. The same way we do with the ones we love.
One of my favorite portrayals of Jesus is in the show, “The Chosen.” Throughout the series He does and says several things that will make you chuckle. One of the most memorable of them is after He heals the man with leprosy he asks his disciples if one of them has an extra tunic. One of them carries over a green tunic and puts it on the man. Then Jesus says, “green is definitely your color, not too shabby!”
Another scene I love is during his encounter with Simon the Zealot, Jesus asks to see his weapon. He takes the knife in his hand and looks up at Simon while saying in a sarcastic manner, “wow, impressive,” then he proceeds to throw it in the river beside them.
This is one of the many ways I picture Him being. One of the many character traits we adopted from Him. This is how I hope it’ll be in Heaven. Not only a place of peace and worship, but also moments where we get to laugh around the table with our creator.
But the great news is we don’t have to wait until then to experience this. I challenge you to try sometime to talk to Jesus the way you would a friend. Or share something funny about your day with Him. He wants to hear it all!
